Terms of Service

Classmoji is a course management platform built and operated by the DALI Lab (Digital Applied Learning and Innovation Lab) at Dartmouth College (“we”, “us” and “our”).
These terms cover the hosted service at classmoji.io. Classmoji is also released as open-source software under the GNU AGPL-3.0 license. If you run your own copy, these terms do not apply to it — that deployment is governed solely by the license, which disclaims all warranties and limits all liability. We provide no support, no warranty and accept no liability for self-hosted deployments.
Who these terms are for
Classmoji is used by instructors and teaching staff, who create and run courses, and by students, who are enrolled in them. Where a term applies to only one group, we say which. “Your institution” means the college or university running the course.

Accounts
You sign in with a GitHub account and are responsible for its security. Classmoji is built for higher education and is not intended for children under 13.
Instructors: authority and responsibility
If you create a course and enroll students, you represent that you are authorized by your institution to use Classmoji for your students’ coursework and academic records.
You are responsible for the grades you assign, the content you publish and the conduct of your course. If your institution instructs us to stop processing or to delete its data, we will comply, and that instruction overrides yours.

Paid plans
Some features require a paid plan. What each plan includes is shown on the billing page and may change.
Paid plans are billed through our payment provider and renew automatically at the end of each billing period you choose, until canceled. You can cancel at any time; canceling stops future renewals, and paid features remain available until the end of the period already paid for.
Payments are non-refundable, including for partial billing periods. If we end a paid account for reasons other than a breach of these terms, we’ll refund the unused part of the current period. We may change prices or plan features; a price change applies from your next billing period after we give notice.
Paid plans are subject to the same terms as the rest of Classmoji, including the disclaimer of warranties and the limitation of liability. Paying for a plan does not add any warranty, service level or guarantee of availability.
Deleting courses and accounts
- Only the owner of a classroom can delete it. Deleting a classroom permanently deletes the data in it.
- Students cannot delete their accounts.
Academic records belong to the institution.
AI features
Classmoji includes AI features, including AI-assisted quizzes. These are served by Anthropic, and Anthropic’s terms and conditions apply to that processing. Course content AI is served by Cloudflare, and Cloudflare’s terms and conditions apply to it.
We make no guarantee about the quality, accuracy or suitability of any AI-generated output. Where an AI feature suggests a grade, it is a recommendation only, and we recommend that a human always review the work.
GitHub
Using Classmoji means using GitHub, under GitHub’s own terms. We create repositories and organization memberships on your behalf. Once something is in GitHub, we cannot guarantee it is erased — commit history persists in copies, forks and clones beyond our reach or GitHub’s. Your GitHub account remains yours to manage.
Acceptable use
Do not use Classmoji to access records you are not entitled to see, defeat its access controls, bulk-extract another course’s data, breach your institution’s academic integrity policy, or violate GitHub’s or any other provider’s terms.
Availability
Classmoji is provided as is. It is academic software operated by faculty and students, with no service-level guarantee. It depends on third-party services and their availability, and we perform maintenance that may interrupt it.
Disclaimer of warranties
Notwithstanding anything in these terms to the contrary, we make no representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, concerning Classmoji, its availability, or any output it produces, including but not limited to representations and warranties as to non-infringement, merchantability and fitness for any particular purpose.
Limitation of liability
The DALI Lab at Dartmouth shall not be liable for, and you hereby irrevocably and forever release Dartmouth — including Dartmouth’s trustees, officers, employees and agents, and the DALI Lab’s staff and students — from any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special or other economic damages suffered by you in connection with these terms or with your use of Classmoji. This includes, but is not limited to, any reliance on AI-generated output, any loss of or inability to access data, any error in a grade or record, and any interruption of the service.
To the extent liability cannot be excluded under applicable law, our total liability is limited to the fees you paid in the twelve months before the claim.
Termination
You may stop using Classmoji at any time. We may suspend or end access at any time. We may discontinue the hosted service, and will give reasonable notice before doing so.
Changes
We may update these terms. Changes are posted here with a new date, and continued use after they take effect means you accept them.
Governing law and venue
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Hampshire, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising from these terms or your use of Classmoji will be heard exclusively in the state or federal courts located in New Hampshire, and you consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.
