Privacy Policy

Classmoji is built and operated by the DALI Lab (Digital Applied Learning and Innovation Lab) at Dartmouth College (“we”, “us” and “our”). This policy covers the hosted service at classmoji.io. If someone runs their own copy of the open-source software, this policy does not apply to it, and whoever operates that copy is responsible for the data in it.

Who this is for

Classmoji is used by instructors and teaching staff and by students. Where something applies to only one group, we say which. “Your institution” means the college or university running the course.

Academic records belong to your institution

Classmoji holds coursework and grades on behalf of the institution running the course. These are education records, governed by FERPA and by that institution’s own policies. We hold them on the institution’s behalf and act on its instructions.

This means neither we nor an individual student can delete a grade or a submission on request. A student who believes a record is inaccurate should speak to their instructor or registrar, who can correct it or ask us to.

What we collect

We collect what the platform needs in order to run a course:

  • Account and profile information, including name, email address and GitHub username
  • Enrollment information — which courses a person is in, and their role
  • Coursework and grades — assignments, submissions, grades, feedback and related correspondence
  • Assessment data — quiz attempts, answers, results and related timing information
  • AI conversations, where a course uses an AI feature
  • An audit log of activity on the platform, including access to and changes to course records
  • Communications — notifications and form responses
  • Billing information, for instructors on a paid plan. Card numbers never reach us; our payment provider handles them.
  • Technical information — sign-in credentials and session records

What we do not do

  • We do not sell your data.
  • We do not run advertising and have no ad-tracking.
  • We do not use third-party analytics or behavioral tracking.
  • We do not train AI models on your data.

How we use it

To run courses; to create and manage the GitHub repositories coursework lives in; to operate AI features; to send the operational email the product requires; to show teaching staff what they need to teach and grade; to keep the platform secure; to diagnose problems; and to bill instructors on a paid plan.

AI features

Classmoji includes AI features, including AI-assisted quizzes. Where a course uses one, the relevant course content and student work are sent to Anthropic, our AI provider, and Anthropic’s terms and conditions apply. Course content AI is served by Cloudflare, and Cloudflare’s terms and conditions apply.

We make no guarantee about the quality or accuracy of AI-generated output. Where an AI feature suggests a grade, we recommend that a human always review the work.

GitHub

Coursework lives in GitHub repositories. We send GitHub what is needed to create them and to manage course organization membership, including GitHub usernames and email addresses.

Once something is in GitHub, we cannot guarantee it is erased. Commit history persists in copies, forks and clones beyond our reach or GitHub’s. GitHub is an independent controller of your GitHub account — see GitHub’s privacy statement, and manage or delete that account through GitHub.

Deleting a Classmoji course does not delete anything in GitHub unless the course owner asks for it at the time.

Service providers

We use a small set of providers to operate Classmoji — for hosting, databases, content delivery, background processing, email, AI features and payments. Each handles data only as needed to provide its service to us.

Retention and deletion

We retain data until it is deleted.

  • Only the owner of a classroom can delete it. Deleting a classroom deletes the data in it.
  • Students cannot delete their accounts.
  • We keep an audit log of activity on the platform, so that we can establish who accessed or changed a record. Like other course data, it is kept until the classroom it belongs to is deleted.
  • Backups are kept for operational recovery and age out on their own cycle.
  • An institution may direct us to delete its data at any time.

Security

We take reasonable measures to protect data. Connections use HTTPS, and access to course data is checked against the person’s role on every request. No system is perfectly secure, and we give no warranty — see the Terms of Service.

Cookies

We use cookies only to keep you signed in and to make the product work. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

Do Not Track

We do not track users across third-party websites, so we do not respond differently to a Do Not Track signal.

Children

Classmoji is built for higher education and is not directed at children under 13.

Changes

We may update this policy. Changes are posted here with a new date.
